What's next? Upgrading from the best smartphone camera

For the past few months I've been concentrating on other cameras, both compact and system. Why?
Not because I'm fed up with smartphone cameras, but because I feel they have reached just about their peak - it's hard to buy a high-end smartphone camera with a mediocre camera these days.

Also, I noticed my own shots improved significantly using better glass and larger sensors. I'm witing this post to share my experience with some important factors when upgrading from a smartphone camera. Hope it will help you make up your mind if you're planning to do so yourself.

Introducing a new project: Visiting Amsterdam

In this short post I'd just like to introduce a new project I've been working on for the past weeks. You must have noticed I love to go to Amsterdam to compare cameras and capture the city in general. I lived in Amsterdam for 25 years and still love to come back whenever I find the time (thank goodness I live nearby).

Recently, it has become my passion to capture not just the gorgeous city, but also its colorful visitors and inhabitants. Hence, I started Visiting Amsterdam on Facebook. Whenever you are visiting Amsterdam yourself - or lucky enough to live there - chances are you'll find your portrait here one day...

If you're on Facebook as well, I hope you'll want to join my travels through the city and enjoy its beatiful people - please hit the famous " like" button if you do! :-)

Hasselblad True Zoom MotoMod revealed

This post is just to quickly point you to several articles on the new Hasselblad True Zoom MotoMod for Motorola Z-phones. Here's what DPReview's hands-on preview with a view interesting samples. You can find some more product shots at The Verge and Engadget. You'll also fine a review over at CNet

Unfortunately I don't have a Moto Z and I'm not even sure this True Zoom MotoMod will come to Europe. It will be important for Motorola to keep the Moto Z-series alive, otherwise it'll be a short joy to work with - if at all. Specs look quite interesting but my experience with "add-ons" isn't overwhelming. Wonder what you think of it?

Sony RX1R II: 20% price increase

It's not like that I'm anywhere near spending a fortune on a compact camera, but Sony isn't exactly making it easier either. I recently noticed the epic Sony RX1R II - full frame 42MP compact - went up in price with a whopping 20%: from €3500 to €4200! Holy cow. Still trying to figure out why that is. Will keep you posted if I have more info. Here's my review from March this year: Nothing compares to you. Tell me if would be worth it for you anyway.

Update: price increase is directly related to the devastating earthquakes hitting Japan earlier this year, affecting a large part of the supply chain. More information here.

Juha Alakarhu returns to Finland to join Nokia

Word just got out that Juha Alakarhu, Lead Program manager of Phones Imaging at Microsoft and former Head of Imaging Technologies at Nokia has returned to Finland - to join Nokia Technologies.

However, he will not be working on the upcoming Nokia smartphones, but he'll be heading the OZO imaging team. The OZO is the 360-degree Virtual Reality Camera Nokia has announced recently (see here). It's not very likely you will be buying an OZO device anytime soon though, since it is designed for professional companies and will cost $60.000.

HTC, Huawei, LG, Lumia, Nokia, Samsung... Bit of a crazy comparison

This is an unusual post with completely different scenes I captured with a variety of smartphones over the past few weeks. I didn't use all devices in every scene, I didn't manage to get a RAW version of every scene either, so I'm sure some of you are going to be disappointed. Also, I can't analyze everything in detail, but I will share all shots in their original size, so you can have a look at them at pixel level yourself if you feel so inclined. And you'll read some general observations about the newest smartphones in this post, being the HTC 10, LG G5, Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and Huawei P9 Plus. Apart from those, you'll see results coming from the Lumia 950 XL (before its recent update), Nokia 808 PureView and even the good old Nokia N8 which I was asked to test just to see how it performs these days.

First impressions of three new smartphone cameras: LG G5, HTC 10 and Huawei P9 Plus

In this post you will read my first impressions of three new smartphone cameras I've been working with for a short while now - the Huawei P9 Plus, LG G5 and HTC 10. I will post a picture comparison later, hopefully including some shots from the Galaxy S7 edge and Lumia 950 XL, which would be the odd one out with a much larger sensor. This post is just to avoid the next one becoming way too long - and it's interesting to see what the new ones have to offer anyway.
