Lumia 1020 full-res shots show less noise?

Just returned from France with a scary amount of shots to share - but I will start with an interesting observation and a few fantastic shots by Tommi Vainionpää aka   Topolino70, one of the brilliant photographers I've been featuring a lot here at the PureViewClub.

He wrote me that when making full resolution shots with the Nokia Lumia 1020, he noticed less noise than choosing the 5MP setting... That's interesting since most of us will know that choosing the full resolution mode on the Nokia 808 PureView, you may expect a bit more noise than with the "oversampled" result. So it looks like that at this moment, it's the other way around with the Nokia Lumia 1020?

He showed me a crop taken from a full resolution shot he took with the Nokia Lumia 1020. You will find the original (crop)  here.

Looking at his photostream on Flickr, I found the same butterfly in this stunning shot (original here)

Fantastic shots right? Don't forget to have a look at the originals too! I'm looking forward to the Nokia Lumia 1020 myself immensely, but I will take Tommi's word for it for now: probably we'll have to wait for an update to get the oversampled results just as good as we're used to see from its predecessor. I can't wait to test it out myself though :-)
