3 Serious cars in the dark - Nokia 808 PureView compared with the Lumia 920
This is about something you'll know when you're from the Netherlands (or Belgium, or Switzerland). 3FM Serious Request is about to take off. 3FM is an extremely popular public radiostation in the Netherlands, and with "Serious Request" the station collects money for the Red Cross. Ten years ago, they collected almost 1 million euros, last year they collected no less than € 8.621.004...
Three deejays are locked up for a few days (without food, just before Christmas) in a public radiostudio in a Dutch city and people pay money to get their requests played on the radio. Other deejays drive around the country to collect as much money as possible. And (only) for this period, those deejays can use the cars I saw parked this evening: the Landrover Range Rover Evoque and a Landrover Freelander 2... Must be fun to drive around in those cars, even if it's only for a few days! :-)
And although I was in a hurry to pick up my daughter, I couldn't resist making some shots of them, comparing the Nokia 808 PureView with the Lumia 920 in a few settings. Also, it was raining a bit, which I really don't like for a long smartphone photoshoot (sorry).
First, to give a general impression, the Nokia 808 PureView on auto. It's about 17 o'clock, the sun is almost gone around this time which you can't see because of bad weather. In other words: it's almost dark.
Then, to see what the Nokia 808 PureView can make out of this, the same shot in night mode.
That's already a lot better, as you can see in the background also. The next shot shows what the Lumia 920 makes out of it in its "night mode". It might not be as true to reality - but I'm impressed with the amount of extra information you get: it looks like it's shot a few hours earlier!
Now since it's all about Nokia PureView, I share the original shots on Flickr as well. In some crops, you will see that the Nokia 808 PureView captures a lot more details - no wonder with a 41MP sensor and oversampling!
Since I made a wide shot (16:9) to get all the cars in, the Lumia 920 is 7.1MP but the Nokia 808 Pureview on night mode is on 5,3 MP. Hence, the crops are a bit different too. I cropped these in 640 x 360 from the original.
First the crop from the 808 PureView shot in night mode:
Next, the crop from the Nokia Lumia 920 in night mode
So yes, the Nokia 808 PureView is still King of Camphones - but we already knew that. I must say the result of the Lumia 920 in low light conditions like really keeps surprising me.
No, I didn't make a shot with the Lumia 920 on auto, nor using the flash (like I said, I was in a hurry). But the Nokia 808 PureView (that "remembers" all its last settings) was still using the flash when I started, so I can share a shot of that as well.
What you see from the cars is generally much sharper, but everything surrounding them is gone (probably also because the cars are white). And here's a similar (640 x 360) crop from the 8MP shot above.
It might be a lot sharper, I don't think you would prefer this result.
So, that's it for now. What do you think of it, which PureView would you prefer?
