Waiting for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1...
Still a few days more and enthusiastic mobile photographers in France and Germany might be able to get their hands on the
Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 (link in German, here
in French), the first smartphone camera that might be equal or even better than the Nokia 808 PureView from 2012. It's supposed to be available in November.
I've been trying to get my hands on a review sample for weeks now, since unfortunately I can't afford to shell out €899, the suggested retail price. I've written about this device more than a month ago here, it was the biggest sensation from this year's Photokina in Frankfurt. For all technical details, please check my earlier post.
Meanwhile, it's almost November and there seems to be no trace of the DMC-CM1. I have a friend in Germany who works in the mobile industry there: he can't order it anywhere. It doesn't show up if I search Google for "Lumix DMC-CM1 kaufen" (buy) or "vorbestellen" (order). It doesn't even show up on Amazon.de, nor in the large German MediaMarkt hardware store. So this morning I called the MediaMarkt in Germany - they never even heard of it.
There simply seems to be no sign of this device... It's confusing, really. Then I reached out to Panasonic Germany, where I learned that it´s a matter of a few days at the most before they will announce when and where the Lumix DMC-CM1 will be available. If I get a word from them, you'll read it here first.
So the rest of this post is about a few captures shared on Flickr by " Lumix Deutschland" . You will find the complete set here. They won't allow you to download the results, although what they are sharing is only 2.7MP (2048 x 1365 pixels). I really hope Panasonic Germany (nor the photographers) will mind I made a few screenshots for this post, to share my enthusiasm for this camera and for their work.
I'll share four shots as captured with the Lumix DMC-CM1 - all resized to fit this post. Moreover, I'll share the direct link of the original on Flickr. First, probably the most wellknown
example of what the Lumix DMC-CM1 is capable of (photographer unknown)
Second, you'll see a shot from the sea, obviously somewhere in Japan - © Kenji Kikuchi 2014 (Tokio Photoclub).
Be sure to check out the details on the largest shot Panasonic is sharing on Flickr. Next a leaf you can almost feel touching the water in a dark pond. © Kouji Tomihisa (Tokio Photoclub)
You'll find the largest size of this shot here. And to conclulde, another full colour capture, a lovely shot of some food, maybe in a kitchen or on a market somewhere (photographer unknown)
Largest version of this shot is here. I could go on and share screenshots of everything Lumix Deutschland is sharing on Flickr, but I won't - once more, the album on Flickr is here. You might even look a bit further and see what you come up with on Flickr, like this :-)
From the last link I'll borrow one product "life style" shot from the Lumix DMC-CM1 itself, casually lying in an expensive Mercedes (just waiting to casually drop on the floor next to the chair it seems :-)
Trust me, I'm doing everything I can to get a review sample of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1. But like I wrote, it will only be released in Germany and France - it's still an experiment so to say, to see if enough people are interested to bring it to more markets. I've come to understand review samples are already scarce for the local media in both countries and like I wrote, as for now there is no sign of the device anywhere in Germany. Nevertheless, I'll keep trying, since I'm sure you're extremely interested in this device as well.
If you live in Germany or France, please let me know if you are planning to buy this smartphone camera - maybe you can help me publishing some shots if I don't succeed getting my hands on one myself. This might also be a good time to point you at the poll at the right hand side of this page: you're welcome to take part and let us know which brand of smartcams interests you most at this moment. Thank you very much! :-)
