Short comparison: colourful cables and crops - Nokia vs Samsung vs Sony

In this short comparison you'll see the Nokia Lumia 830, Lumia 930 and Lumia 1020, the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom and Sony Xperia Z3 capturing a collection of colorful UTP-cables. Nothing pretentious, just lots of colours and details, fun to compare.

Last week I brought a few smartphones to work, hoping there would be something nice to capture - stuff you don't have at home. I found it in a collection of UTP cables and I tried to make as similar shots as possible. Cool thing is the colors are more or less standard - at least as far as I know: the red, yellow, green and blue are the same all over the planet, right? The lighting was exactly the same in all shots and I put all devices on ISO 100 for the better comparison. The scene looks like this (resized to fit the page as always).

This comes from the Nokia Lumia 930 and I have to add I like this shot best. First, I'll show you the shots coming from the other files.

You'll notice subtle differences in colours and light, but I think it's safe to say all results are quite good. So let's crop our way into them to reveill soms details.

Smallest originals are the oversampled results from the Nokia Lumia 930 and 1020, so as I've been doing more often lately, I'll resize all shots to 5MP before I start cropping. The original format of the Lumia 830 is 8MP and both the Galaxy K Zoom and the Xperia Z3 shot at 15.5MP. Here we go. I chose the part on which I focused with all cameras and share the crops in the same order as above.

I think it will be obvious why I like the Lumia 930 most. And it's clear the Lumia 830's sensor is a lot smaller and can't handle the fine details as well - don't get me wrong, I still think it's a pretty good shot, it's just not as good. The Lumia 1020 is doing a great job as expected as well and "as usual" it's a bit brighter, showing just a little bit more noise. The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom is doing a fine job as well. The only device not living up to its expectations is Sony's Xperia Z3.

Let's do one final crop comparison - from the original 16MP shot from the Lumia 930 and the 15.5MP shot from the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom, chosen slightly above the previous crop. First, the Nokia Lumia 930.

And the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

Sure, differences are marginal, but still, the result coming from the Lumia 930 does look a bit better to me. Splitting hairs? Please let me know below. You'll find the original shots in another dedicated album on Flickr (I even added the original 34MP shot from the Lumia 1020).
