Old Barcelona, through the lens of the Nokia Lumia 1020

Well, I tried to get my hands on the Nokia Lumia Icon once more, but I failed. There's not much PureView news coming from the Mobile Congress this year - in fact, the Nokia 808 PureView was the only time there was PureView news coming from Barcelona.

Even stranger, you will find all kinds of typical Nokia things promoted (from Refocus to Storyteller, Nokia Here et cetera) but you won't find the word PureView anywhere. There's even no #ZoomReinvented to be found either. It's remarkable, really, but many people from Nokia didn't seem to realize it themselves.

In this post I'll be sharing some of the PureView shots I captured in Barcelona with the Nokia Lumia 1020, most of them captured last Sunday, wandering through Barcelona with a friend. I made a strict selection of the shots I think are actually worth sharing. This is supposed to be the oldest naturel well in Barcelona - not sure if it's true, but it definetly looks old.

Even older - or maybe from the same period: a part of a Roman temple recovered in Barcelona, the August Temple. I had no idea this about 2000 year old palace even existed in Barcelona.

As you all know, the Dutch excel in speed skating. in fact, we all could have made it to the Olympics, it's not something we need to qualify for - all Dutch people go this fast: we have a lottery decide who will beat the rest of the world (except Norway). And when we stop skating we all wear wooden shoes. Simple as that :-)

In this second post comparing the Nokia PureView flagships with the new Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, I'll focus on new wooden shoes I noticed in the large store I wrote about yesterday. You really should read my first post for all background information about this small series, otherwise I will keep repeating myself.

Wooden shoes are not a myth, like the American (!) story of Hans Brinker is. Wooden shoes are actually for sale like in these kind of inside and outside decoration stores, since there's at lot of gardening involved. This shot from the Lumia 1020 shows what this short post is all about.

2 Nokia Lumia 1020 - Wooden shoes - 5MP

Farmers wear wooden shoes. People who work in their garden often do. I never had any pair of wooden shoes on my feet as far as I can remember. But it makes for a very Dutch subject, so why not capture them to compare?

The shop attendant quietly asked me what I was doing. He saw me shooting inside the enormous decoration store, filled with with flowers, plants and all kind of home decoration and furniture. I was working with no less than five different smartphones.

Much to my surprise, he was okay with it after I explained I run a blog about smartphone photography - "next time, just let us know, we'll give you something to wear so you won't be bothered anymore". Amazing.

Circumstances are close to ideal in a huge store like that, especially when there are not too many customers. It's light, but always dry (and warm). There is no wind. There's tons of stuff to see - it may not always be what it's like in real life (it's all gorgeous and clean), but it will give you lots of details to capture.

Nokia 808 PureView vs Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Sony QX100 - a detailed comparison

I know you like comparisons like this - and I do too, but realizing them is extremely time consuming. This week I was very happy with two things though.

First of all, a bright sunny morning, that gave me the chance to finally do some shooting in the exact same light conditions, with the Nokia 808 PureView, Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520 and Sony QX100.

Second, I was very glad Harsh Verma  - who'se been analyzing some of my shots earlier - was willing to do his analysis of these early morning shots. There has been some intense data exchange between The Netherlands and India, and I'm happy to present the result here.

This is a true collaboration in the sense that all I did was the shooting with the different cameras. These shots are not spectacular in any way, but provides you with a lot of details to compare. You may do so yourself as well, since I put his selection of all the shots used in this comparison (and more)  on SkyDrive.

All the text you will read below however - including the conclusion - is written by Harsh Verma.

A detailed comparison of the Nokia 808 PureView, Lumia 1020 and Sony QX100

I am doing detailed comparison of the 808 vs 1020 and of the QX100 vs 1020. The reason for going separately is due to difference in resolutions. Having advantage of RAW of 1020 I can oversample to 20 mp and compare with best possible image quality. For this I use Lightroom 5.2. These are excellent shots because of same light conditions and same shot angle. Further any kind of artificial post-processing will easily be noticed in these natural scenes.

For this:
1) I converted .DNG files of 1020 to respective 38 MP JPG for comparing with 808 Pureview with a very slight change in white balance to match 808’s colour.
2) I converted .DNG files of 1020 to 20 MP JPG for comparing with Sony QX100.
3) Right hand side images and crops are of 808 and QX100 while left one’s are 1020’s.

Next, I took crops of several points in images. You will find most of the original crops in links below the shots. You will find all crops here.

I haven't been able to post or shoot much in the last days as you may have noticed. Some club visitors have been urging me to come up with a new PureView comparison, and you know I''ll try to oblige whenever I can.

I was in a small Dutch town called Veenendaal for the weekend, the place where I grew up all too long ago. I still visit my mother there often, as you may have seen in several posts about the flowers in her garden.

During a short walk in the sun this afternoon, I managed to make a few shots with the Nokia 808 PureView, Lumia 1020 and 1520. Actually, I'm not sure it this comparison is very detailed, quite limited or both, but I'll share all the shots with you anyway.

The scenes you will see are from a big white 1906 church (I always seem to capture churches, although I'm not much of a religious person myself) and of some red berries, growing on a white wall once more. These were just the best scenes I saw during that short walk - I know it's not brilliant or anything, but I hope it makes for an interesting comparison.

I won't share all the shots in this post though, just a few resized ones and a few 100% screenshots. You will find all the different shots in a dedicated folder on SkyDrive. All settings were on "auto" on all devices (more about that below).

First the big white Church in the center of Veenendaal, in more or less chonological order: the Nokia 808 PureView, the Lumia 1020 and 1520, both on Black of course. What you see is the resized version of the 8MP shot from the 808 PureView, and the 5MP shots from both Lumias.

Hover your mouse over the shot to see which camera was used, click on the shot to see the Pureview result on Flickr.

There is a slight color difference, but I don't see anything to complain about here.
